Post Title: Health and Safety Advisor

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Health and Safety team at Bury Council.

Our team play an essential role in ensuring the safe and effective operation of the Council and driving forward the required organisational changes and developments which are necessary to deliver both a balanced budget and a workforce with the capacity, capability and culture to deliver on Bury’s LET’S Do It ambition.

To help us achieve this we are looking to appoint an experienced health and safety professional with strong interpersonal and organisational skills as a Health and Safety Advisor, whose work will focus on supporting our housing related services. These were previously provided by Six Town Housing but moved back into the Council in February 2024.

Reporting to the HR Business Manager, and working closely with the Lead Health and Safety Advisor, you would help to ensure that we deliver an effective and efficient health and safety service by playing a key role in:

  • Co-ordinating health and safety measures across housing related services, to minimise risk ensure compliance with legislation and promote best practice.
  • Supporting the development of arrangements and practices that mainstream health and safety and encourage a positive, enabling culture.
  • Researching, updating, reviewing, developing, communicating, publishing and advising on plans, procedures, policy, strategies and arrangements.
  • Delivering training to ensure capable and competent health and safety practice is mainstreamed by managers and their teams.
  • Undertaking investigations and audits and, where appropriate leading on the delivery of appropriate follow-up actions.

Your role would be interesting and varied, involving the provision of advice to health and safety colleagues, employees and managers, as well as working closely with the trade unions.

This opportunity would suit a health and safety professional looking for a new challenge.

Your office base would be a Council building in Bury town centre, and you would be expected to spend a reasonable proportion of your time working at locations such as our Bradley Fold depot in Radcliffe. However, we do support employees to work with agility, where appropriate and subject to service requirements.

Normal hours of work are 37 hours per week based around the usual business working week.
