Doing compliance differently across Greater Manchester

This is Greater Manchester, we do things differently here. Even our public protection teams pay homage to that phrase. We are Business Compliance Support (BCS), an exciting business compliance service helping businesses across Greater Manchester comply with complex legislation and regulations, and we need your fresh ideas and enthusiasm to help us do it.

Environmental Health, Trading Standards and Licensing all form our public protection teams, and they do exactly what the name suggests… they work with businesses to ensure that their policies and procedures stand up to scrutiny, helping protect the public from being ripped off and protecting staff and customers from illness, injury and even death.

Almost two years ago we began on a journey to provide compliance advice and guidance to small and medium sized businesses in Greater Manchester. We recognised that the lockdowns and cost-of-living crisis over the last five years have had an impact on many businesses, affecting their ability to trade and giving them more to think about than ever before. So we are here to offer them one less thing to worry about, by providing a consistent and readily available Business Compliance Support service.

The service has proven to be a great success and along with consistently amazing feedback from businesses and local authorities alike, BCS was also shortlisted for two prestigious national local government awards in 2024!

Sarah’s story

Former Business Compliance Support Officer at Stockport Council

I started the Business Compliance Support job with little knowledge about regulatory services. It gave me the opportunity to work in Environmental Health, Licensing and Trading Standards, to get an overview of what they did, regularly shadowing officers with a lot of experience and the amount I learnt in 15 months was crazy (in a good way).

I was able to complete the level 4 Regulatory Compliance Apprenticeship gaining knowledge through the apprenticeship and on the job learning at the Local Authority. I would highly recommend working for GMBCS, it gave me so many opportunities to learn and develop skills and behaviours.

I have gone on to get a permanent job at Manchester City Council which I would never have got it if hadn’t been for the experience I gained during the apprenticeship and working for GMBCS and the local authority.
