I am delighted to invite you to consider joining our fantastic HR & OD team. The vision we all have for our city is for a better and fairer Salford for everyone, underpinned by our organisational mission ‘to create the best quality of life for the people of Salford’ and as a result we are looking for people who take real pride in what they do and are also proud to work for Salford, are people centred and values based with a passion for continuous improvement.
You will be joining us at a really interesting time as we move into the next phase of our response to the ongoing pandemic where we are continuing to support our people to adapt and adjust to living and working with COVID-19. Our main priority since March has been to support a significant part of our workforce to effectively and confidently transition into working completely virtually, whilst also ensuring our essential services remain unaffected by the pandemic and our communities continue to feel supported.
The innovative and rapid response from the HR and OD team has meant that our people have had access to great resources, tools, advice and regularly communications – to give you a flavour our people can book a virtual session with a ‘digital eagle’ to help with any concerns about using the digital technology which we rely on, there are lots of top tips for working from home and leading remote teams and our leaders can book a ‘coffee and a chat’ with one of our HR and OD Business Partners whenever they need any support. The health and wellbeing of our people is more important now than ever so we have rolled out a range of support for our people from virtual Tai Chi, to a one-to-one with one of our wellbeing ambassadors together with our comprehensive employee assistance programme.
Following our successful immediate response, we now look towards the future as we begin creating our approach to building back a better fairer Salford - which focuses on the future of how we will work and deliver our services. We are thinking about everything from how, when and where we work to make sure we are as accessible and inclusive as possible through to designing collaborative new office spaces and behavioural change all with a focus on a digital first approach to support us working in these new and creative ways.
We have learnt so much during these challenging times and the way we have responded as a HR and OD service and an organisation has been fantastic. It really is a pivotal time to be working in an organisation such as this and to be part of a service that will be leading this change. Through our innovative organisational development methodology, our approach to service design and the importance of co-design, we remain at the forefront of our sector.
People centred and values based - that’s the Spirit of Salford! We have developed a culture that encourages innovation, flexibility, learning, and empowerment; that ‘gives permission’ to all employees to make decisions that are in the best interests of our residents; one that creates the environment where everyone feels inspired and empowered to lead positive change.
The Spirit of Salford is why we do what we do. Our values of pride, passion, people and personal responsibility capture this spirit and expectations of the city - they inform the way we operate. Our values describe the personal qualities every employee is expected to demonstrate when carrying out their role. These values are central to the way we communicate about the council and the way in which we behave with colleagues, customers and partners.
If you want to be part of the Spirit of Salford; connect with our values; are interested in working with a committed and enthusiastic team and can provide the professional expertise required I look forward to welcoming you to our team.
We are committed to developing a culture which respects individuals, appreciates difference and allows everyone regardless of background to reach their full potential. We are proud to be an accredited disability confident employer and a Stonewall Diversity Champion. We understand how hard it can be to combine caring for a loved one with work so we also provide support and flexibility to balance family and caring responsibilities with work. We have some amazing opportunities presented by our transformation agenda, devolution, and public sector reform, the ability to lead and manage large-scale change has never been more important.
In order to meet our aim where all individuals and teams benefit from excellent leadership and all leaders have the skills and behaviours to successfully lead and implement change, we need ‘transformational’ leaders that will help shape our city.
We need values-based leaders who can achieve results through and with others, leaders who have the skills and confidence to carry out the people aspects of their roles; leaders who are coaches and developers of people and leaders who can lead the way forward-taking a place and whole system approach to leadership.

We want to make a real difference to the lives of Salford people, and to achieve this vision, we've identified our eight key priorities, which we've called the Great Eight.
Set by our City Mayor, Paul Dennett, these key priorities will guide us in allocating resources and agreeing our plans. They are also supported by the council's core values: pride, passion, people and personal responsibility, which underpin what we do and the way we work.
