Dear candidate,

Thank you for considering joining our Salford team. Salford as a city has changed dramatically in recent years and now is Salford’s time. Salford is growing and it’s an exciting time to join us. More people than ever are choosing Salford as a place to live, work, invest and visit and we really are transforming into a modern, global city.

Unprecedented private and public investment over the last ten years, including internationally recognised regeneration around MediaCityUK, New Bailey and Greengate has transformed Salford from its post-industrial roots into a forward looking and inclusive city at the heart of the city-regional economy. Salford’s economy is growing and we are rapidly becoming the UK’s hot spot for new business in distinct sectors with MediaCityUK and the Quays growing into one of Europe’s leading digital, creative and technology clusters. Before the coronavirus pandemic the council was planning for 40,000 new homes by 2040 and creating 40,000 new jobs and we already have one of the youngest and fastest growing populations in Greater Manchester. Salford is the home of MediaCityUK, the BBC and the site of the fifth national RHS Garden, Bridgewater. With a developing strong cultural and visitor offer, a rich heritage, waterside attractions and huge swathes of beautiful green spaces, the city truly has an impressive offer.

As the work to address the unprecedent challenges of COVID-19 continues, we are drawing on our long history of partnership working to protect residents and the local economy and deliver vital public services. We believe that Salford can respond to the crisis by building back a better and fairer city - ours is a resilient, inclusive and innovative city.

Salford is a city of contrasts with some of the poorest wards in the country when comparing and contrasting using the government’s index of multiple deprivation, and we are absolutely committed to making sure that all our residents can benefit from growth as we better connect our people and place. Our vision is to create a better and fairer Salford for all and provide the best quality of life for our residents. This vision is underpinned by our Great Eight shared priorities which we have developed with our key anchor institutions across the city. The Great Eight guide how we allocate our resources, plan our projects and engage with our citizens. Integration and partnership working are at the heart of our approach as we deliver on these strategic priorities.

In Salford we take a more interventionist approach to growth with developments such as Derive, which is our wholly-owned arm’s length housing company, established to build more truly affordable housing in the city to help tackle the housing and homelessness challenges that we face. The future of Derive is a major strategic ambition for the city – building truly affordable houses for rent and sale.

The council has forged ambitious and effective partnerships with other anchor institutions in Salford, including Salford NHS Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), Salford’s Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise Sector, the University of Salford and Salford Royal Foundation Trust. These relationships have provided the foundation for ground-breaking joint projects including the integration of health and social care and children’s social care, public health and primary care commissioning. We are at the forefront of a national health revolution that has brought together health and social care and are proud that our health system is one of the strongest in the country with a reputation to match, with the CCG and Acute Trust both rated as outstanding.

As the first partnership in the country to launch a fully integrated care organisation in 2016, health and social care has really transformed in Salford. Services are now delivered at a neighbourhood level allowing health and care needs to be agreed locally with communities and partners.

Here at Salford we are people centred and values based. Our people are at the heart of delivering our priorities for the city. The Spirit of Salford is tangible and our values of pride, passion, people and personal responsibility capture this spirit and expectations of the city and they inform the way we operate. These values also underpin our leadership framework which sets out the skills and behaviours required of our leaders in Salford.

Our leaders help to develop a culture that is inclusive, values and welcomes diversity, fosters innovation, flexibility, learning, and empowerment. A culture that ‘gives permission’ to all colleagues to make decisions that are in the best interests of our residents. A culture that creates the environment where everyone feels inspired and empowered to lead positive change, where continuous improvement is at the forefront of people’s minds and where people are inspired to constantly learn and improve.
