My social work journey started as a student in Bury, once I qualified, I was fully supported to do my ASYE (Assessed and Supported Year in Employment) which incorporated some fantastic training opportunities through a monthly ASYE support group.
In continuing to develop my skills and knowledge, I enjoyed working across a variety of social work teams, both within Bury and other local authorities before eagerly returning to Bury to work with colleagues and management within the Learning Disability team.
Working in the Learning Disability team makes me extremely proud and gives me a great deal of satisfaction in supporting individuals to feel empowered to achieve their own goals and live the lives they want. This would not be possible without the help and support of my fantastic colleagues and management team who really take the time to get to know you and care about you. I love being able to work autonomously, while also knowing that should I need some assistance, there are always people willing to step in and help.
In addition, there are lots of opportunities for training and progression, with chances to get involved in projects outside of your normal day to day role, for example I’ve been our team champion for autism, attending the Autism Partnership Board, delivering presentations to staff about personal budgets and have been involved in developing the way we commission learning disability services.
Having worked for a couple of other local authorities I can say with confidence that Bury Council offers a fantastic work life balance to its employees, one of the reasons I am back! The management team understand the importance of flexibility in promoting personal wellbeing. I’ve found this to be the case both before and after having a child. Now I’m a mother of a toddler, I never worry if nursery closes or my little boy is sick as I know that Bury Council is really understanding as an employer in supporting you to work around this. I also feel I have a good balance of working from home and in the office.
