Wigan Council employs over 4,000 staff, not including schools. We are the ninth largest metropolitan authority in the country and the second largest in Greater Manchester. We deliver over 700 services to 320,000 residents. As one of the biggest employers in the borough, the council have focussed on our relationship with staff through an innovative range of engagement, reward and recognition initiatives.
Our workforce strives to be the best they can and are committed to the Be Wigan behaviours. Upon induction to the workplace all staff are given the opportunity to go through an experience known as Be Wigan. Here they are shown all about the priorities of the council and the behaviours. If you are courageous, positive and accountable Wigan is the right place for your next career move. Our workforce are happy and engaged. The chief executive and leader of the council regularly hold events for staff to attend. These are called Listening into Action. It is an opportunity for staff to hear more about the council’s priorities and ask any questions directly to the chief executive.
Staff are also given the chance to sign up to the ‘staff deal’. The Staff Deal is an informal agreement with all staff. It outlines what employees can expect from us, and in return what we expect from them. It is a series of pledges on our part and their part, for example we will reward commitment and hard work if staff can be efficient, flexible and professional
As an employer we want to thank our employees for their hard work and commitment by giving them the opportunity to access a range of exclusive rewards and benefits. From a pension scheme to an employee benefits platform what we offer at Wigan is much more than just a payslip. Here are some of the things available for our employees.
A savings and benefits web site which provides our staff with exclusive discounts at a range of high street retailers both in store and on line. In addition to this we have teamed up with organisations across the borough to offer some great local discounts to our staff.
We also encourage employees to take part in our volunteering scheme by providing up to two days leave per year to give something back to the local community.
Salary sacrifice schemes
The council offers a wide selection of salary sacrifice schemes for staff to participate in. This means staff can choose to give up some of their salary in return for a non-cash benefit, for example nursery fees, a lease car or technology package. Some salary sacrifice schemes are exempt from tax and/or National Insurance contributions which means you can make a one-off saving on the benefit by entering into this arrangement.
Staff can increase leave entitlement for up to a week by purchasing additional leave or selling up to five days annual leave in any one leave year.
This scheme allows staff to convert a portion of their salary into childcare vouchers that can be used for a range of child care arrangements for children up to the age of 16.
Annual rail ticket
For those staff coming in to work on the train the Northern scheme allows you to purchase a discounted annual rail ticket.
Cycle to work
For those employees who like to cycle to work we offer a cycle scheme which enables staff to exchange a portion of their salary for the use of a bike and accessories up to the value of £1000.
We have also introduced a number of employee recognition schemes
Attendance and Loyalty Reward Scheme
The Attendance Reward Scheme formally recognises and rewards employees that achieve 100% attendance over a sustained period of time whilst our Loyalty Reward Scheme recognises and rewards long term loyalty, service and commitment to the council.
Confident Council Awards
The Confident Council Awards recognise and celebrate the exceptional work employees do within their roles.
