Are you the type of person who will listen to young people's views and wishes to enable them to be at the centre of future plans? Do you have a passion for helping young people, using your best judgement to make hard decisions and think creatively? Do you have experience of working in a residential children’s home?

If you can answer YES to the above you may be the person we are looking for. The ATOM Team is an exciting initiative using creative people to develop creative plans for families in the Wigan Borough.

The service is based on a traditional residential model adhering to the Children’s Homes Regulations 2015 with a multi-disciplinary team around the child/family. This team uses a range of creative techniques with permissions to do things in a different way.

The ATOM team at Wigan Council support young people, aged 12 to 25 in, or close to the edge of care who:

  • Are at risk of being close to becoming Looked After
  • Are in fostering placements requiring additional support
  • Have been placed out of borough who would like to come back and live in Wigan
  • Are in families that already have one child in care and who may also be at risk of becoming looked after
  • Have recently moved to supported or independent accommodation
  • Are using short or medium term beds in one of three residential homes

As a team we work hard to support these young people towards permanence in nurturing family settings by working to build strong relationships. The ATOM project invests in helping young people build trust in lasting relationships with foster carers, family, friends and those in the community, including support to improve their ability to relate to and communicate with others if needed.

Finding a place for these young people to belong and preparing them for adult life is a key aim of our team. We will help the young people find a place they can call home and help develop long term relationships with those who they live with.

We help them to decide who they want to be and how to get there, ensuring the young person is fully involved in decision making and where possible, is offered a choice.

Our team is currently seeking enthusiastic people who can build positive and lasting relationships with young people, sticking by them to help to ensure the best outcomes are achieved across the Wigan borough, in line with our Staff Deal.

Here’s what our staff have to say about working for us:

Jessica initially joined us as a Hub Key Worker before progressing to a Portfolio Lead. She said “I always knew I wanted to work with children from a very young age.

I started my career in a nursery before going to university. It was at this point that I realised I wanted to pursue a career supporting children and young people."

Hub Keyworker Rachel added: “After completing a volunteering placement I realised that I had a passion for supporting young people within a residential setting. I am a creative person who is driven and motivated to provide opportunities for young people to achieve their full potential. Wigan Council really is a fantastic authority to work for, as they provide opportunities to gain qualifications which help your development!”

We currently have a number of exciting opportunities to join our multi-agency team within ATOM which include:
