What is your current job role and what does it entail?
My role at Rochdale Borough Council involves working in the Civic Office as the Mayoral Attendant/Officer to support the team in providing a “Professional and Diplomatic service to the Mayor of Rochdale”. The role involves a range of duties, from driving the Mayor to engagements to organising the Mayor’s diary.
Other duties include ensuring that the Mayoral duties are carried out within the time frame agreed and to the correct professional standards as required while maintaining a high level of security during Mayoral public events, and protecting/safeguarding the Mayor’s robe and chains of office. I also assist the team in organising the Civic events throughout the municipal year.
What would you say was the best thing about your apprenticeship?
The best thing about my apprenticeship is that throughout my role I have developed both professionally and personally. I have become a more well-rounded individual with the confidence to express my views, passions and aspirations for Rochdale.
Do you think you would be doing your job role now if you hadn’t have done your apprenticeship?
No. I think the apprenticeship gave me an opportunity to progress within the Mayoral Office. I feel like the apprenticeship has opened up so many doors for me in the future.
Have you got any advice for new apprentices?
I have embraced every aspect of my apprenticeship and thoroughly enjoyed every moment. My experience has shown that even though I dropped out of university, young people can still achieve great success and experiences. I hope this provides comfort and inspiration to other young people who feel university might not be for them.
I believe that apprenticeships are the backbone to many small businesses and organisations across the UK. I have been qualified as a Greater Manchester apprentice ambassador to support people through apprenticeships.
