Tameside MBC has a well-established Welfare Rights & Debt Advice Service. An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Welfare Rights Officer to support rough sleepers initiatives in Tameside including A Bed Every Night.
A Bed Every Night is a commitment to provide a bed, welcome, hot meal and support for anyone sleeping rough in Greater Manchester. As part of this support, we would like this to include advice on welfare benefits from help making benefit claims through to challenging negative benefit decisions including representation at appeal tribunals.
You will work with colleagues in our Rough Sleepers Initiatives including the A Bed Every Night service through multi-agency working to address homelessness through the provision of welfare benefits advice. This will be partly based on the street with support from outreach and also within our offer at A Bed Every Night and Rough Sleepers schemes. You will also facilitate referrals into mental health and GP services when required.
Your role will include building relationships within our voluntary and charitable organisations who help those experiencing homelessness.
You will use your expertise and knowledge in welfare rights advice work to advise on entitlement to welfare benefits, tax credits and charitable funds. You will assist with claims for benefits and charitable funds as well as helping residents to challenge benefit decisions. The post holder will be expected to provide representation at Social Security Appeal Tribunals up to and including Upper Tribunal level.
The successful applicant would need to have relevant, demonstrable experience in providing welfare benefits advice work, including tribunal representation, and a good knowledge of the benefits system, especially in the areas of sickness and disability.
