Your Role

We are looking for both Early Career and Experienced Social Workers to join our Children with Disabilities Service. Please indicate in your application which role you would like to be considered for.

We’re expanding our Children with Disabilities (CWD) Service and looking for passionate social workers who want to make a real difference. It’s an exciting time to join us as we invest in strengthening our support for children and families in Stockport.

Our CWD team works with children who have the most complex needs in Stockport including children in need, those requiring protection, and children in our care. We are ambitious for every young person, and Preparation for Adulthood is a key focus to ensure they can reach their full potential.

This role is rooted in building strong relationships with children who communicate in diverse ways and truly understanding what matters to them. You’ll bring creativity, teamwork, and a commitment to keeping the child’s voice central to all decisions. Curiosity and a willingness to learn are essential as practice and policy evolve.

Above all, you’ll champion children’s futures and support them on their path towards Gloriously Ordinary Lives as adults.

About You

If you are a social worker who is passionate about inclusive, strengths-based practice and committed to helping children thrive we want to hear from you!

  • Early career social workers will be supported through our ASYE and SSYE programmes, with a personalised career pathway and strong supervision.
  • Experienced social workers will bring at least two years of statutory experience, including direct work with disabled children, and be ready to develop their practice further.

About Us

This is a period of positive growth and development for our CWD service. We now have two dedicated teams, led by experienced Team Leaders and supported by a mix of qualified and alternatively qualified colleagues to ensure seamless transitions between short breaks and social work.

We have invested in a specialist training offer to give you the skills you needs, including:

  • Talking Mats
  • Makaton
  • Mental Capacity Act
  • Continuing Care
  • Stockport Family Practice Framework

We are collocated with our EHCP service, Neurodiversity Team and Inclusion Service, enabling strong, integrated working and a genuinely supportive environment.

We take colleague wellbeing seriously and offer a wide range of support, including access to wellbeing resources, reflective spaces and active staff networks. You’ll be part of a service that values connection, peer support and a healthy worklife balance. We also cover Social Work England registration fees as part of our commitment to supporting your professional journey.

At Stockport Council we are one ambitious team on a mission to create opportunities for everyone who lives, works and spends time in the borough. Working at Stockport Council means contributing to one of the most thriving towns in the North. We’re keen to recruit people with the right values and behaviours that can help us ensure our workplace values are at the heart of everything we do.

We are proud to be recognised under the Good Employment Charter as an organisation committed to the wellbeing of our colleagues. As members of the charter, we have been recognised as a great place to work for all colleagues and pledge to pay the real living wage, engage staff in key decisions and endorse fair and flexible working conditions.

If you would like to find out more about the role please contact Suzannah Sammons on suzannah.sammons@stockport.gov.uk for an informal discussion about the role.

The successful applicant’s appointment will be subject to satisfactory pre-employment clearances including a Disclosure and Barring Service check.

Stockport Council holds a Visa sponsorship licence but this can only be used for certain roles and this campaign does not currently qualify.

Please note that we have made a commitment to improve the employment opportunities for people with disabilities, care leavers and ex-military personnel. As part of the Guaranteed Assessment Scheme you will therefore be guaranteed to be shortlisted for Assessment if you meet both the criteria for the scheme and the essential job role criteria.
