We are looking for a skilled and motivated Vehicle & Plant Mechanic to join our Transport Service at Bury Council. You’ll play a key role in ensuring our diverse fleet of vehicles, plant, and equipment is maintained to a high standard, safe, and fully compliant with our Goods Vehicle Operator Licence requirements.

Working within a busy workshop environment, you’ll carry out maintenance, repairs, servicing, diagnostics and associated tasks on a wide range of specialist vehicles and equipment. This role also supports MOT and taxi testing activities, with training available for the right candidate.

What you’ll be doing

As a Vehicle and Plant Mechanic, you’ll be part of a team delivering a reliable, customerfocused service. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Maintaining and repairing the Council’s fleet of vehicles, plant, and equipment (including hired items)
  • Conducting servicing, inspections, and preparing vehicles for HGV, Class 4, 5 and 7 MOT tests
  • Carrying out mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and diagnostic repairs
  • Identifying and requesting parts through the internal stores system
  • Supporting Class 4 & 7 MOT and Hackney/Private Hire vehicle testing (training available)
  • Undertaking welding, fabrication and minor body repairs
  • Ensuring accurate completion of job cards, inspection sheets and associated documentation
  • Working safely at all times including the correct handling and disposal of hazardous substances
  • Attending vehicle breakdowns and carrying out roadside repairs
  • Assisting with the development of trainees/apprentices
  • Contributing to maintaining a clean, safe and compliant workshop environment

You’ll be someone who:

  • Takes pride in delivering highquality mechanical work that keeps essential services running smoothly
  • Can confidently diagnose faults across mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems
  • Works well as part of a busy workshop team and can follow procedures with accuracy
  • Communicates clearly and respectfully with colleagues, suppliers and members of the public
  • Has a flexible approach and is willing to work evenings, nights, weekends or take part in an emergency callout rota when required
  • Is adaptable and comfortable working on a wide range of specialist vehicles, plant and equipment
  • Is committed to safety, compliance and maintaining professional standards at all times
  • Is willing to undertake further training, including MOT testing and specialist equipment training
  • Brings a positive, reliable attitude and takes ownership of providing a firstclass service for the community

Hours, development and training

  • 37 hours per week, based at Bradley Fold Depot
  • Flexible working may include evening, night or weekend work, plus participation in an emergency callout rota
  • Training may take place outside normal hours or at other locations
  • Opportunities to gain new skills, including:
  • Class 4 & 7 MOT testing
  • Specialist diagnostics
  • Working on complex electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems
  • Local authority fleet maintenance experience
  • Supportive environment where you can help develop apprentices and trainees

Normal hours of work are 37 hours per week based around the usual business working week. Dependent on service requirements, you may be required to work on a rota basis.
