You’ll be working outdoors in all weather conditions as part of a tight-knit crew delivering essential services every day.

This is a role for someone who takes pride in their work, enjoys being active, and wants to be part of a team that keeps the borough running.

About the Role

As a Waste Collection Labourer, you’ll support a range of environmental services including refuse and recycling collections, street cleansing, and beach cleaning. No two days are the same — you’ll be working across different areas, tackling a variety of tasks, and helping maintain high service standards.

You’ll also be one of the visible faces of the Council, so a professional and respectful approach when dealing with the public is essential.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Collecting household and commercial waste and recycling across the borough
  • Safely loading refuse vehicles using lifting equipment and approved procedures
  • Returning bins, boxes, and containers correctly without causing obstruction
  • Carrying out contamination checks on recycling where required
  • Assisting the driver with safe reversing and manoeuvring
  • Supporting daily vehicle checks and helping keep vehicles clean and operational
  • Carrying out litter picking, sweeping, and general street cleansing duties
  • Working on the beach and in open spaces to maintain cleanliness
  • Emptying litter and dog waste bins
  • Assisting with the removal of fly-tipped waste, including hazardous materials when required
  • Working in back alleys and public areas to clear waste and vegetation
  • Assisting with the delivery, repair, and removal of bins and containers
  • Supporting public awareness by promoting correct recycling practices
  • Reporting hazards, missed collections, defects, or issues promptly

 What We’re Looking For

  • Strong work ethic and a willingness to carry out physically demanding duties
  • Good level of fitness, with the ability to walk long distances and lift regularly
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions throughout the year
  • A reliable, punctual, and safety-focused approach
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and on your own initiative
  • Good communication skills and a positive attitude when dealing with the public
  • A basic understanding of health & safety and safe working practices
  • Pride in your work and attention to detail

Desirable (but not essential):

  • Manual handling training
  • Reversing assistant training

Working Environment

  • Early start (06:30am) with daytime finish
  • Outdoor, active role in all weather conditions
  • Exposure to waste materials and physically demanding tasks
  • Fast-paced environment with daily targets and routes

What We Offer

  • Permanent, secure employment
  • Regular working hours with overtime opportunities (including weekends and bank holidays)
  • Full training, PPE, and ongoing support
  • A supportive and team-focused working environment
  • A varied and active role – no two days are the same
  • Opportunities to develop skills and progress within Waste Operations
  • The chance to make a real, visible difference in the community every day
