Heaton School is seeking an exceptional Bank SEND Teacher to join our casual cover team. This role offers the perfect opportunity for an experienced teacher looking for flexible working hours, allowing you to pick up shifts that match your availability while making a profound difference in the lives of young people.
You will step in to lead small class teams and deliver highly individualised learning opportunities for secondary-aged pupils with severe, profound, or complex learning difficulties, complex medical conditions, and associated challenging behaviours.

While Heaton School is a secondary special school, our students benefit greatly from developmental, sensory-based, and early-years frameworks. We warmly welcome and encourage applications from Primary-trained teachers (Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2) who excel at scaffolding learning. Post 16 experience is also welcomed. Prior experience teaching SEND is highly desirablepreferably within a Special School settingbut we also welcome passionate educators looking to bring their skills into a specialist environment.
The Role
In this rewarding role, you will seamlessly step into the classroom to maintain a safe, nurturing environment where education, care, and therapy are integrated.
Key Responsibilities:
Adaptive Curriculum Delivery: Deliver highly differentiated semi-formal or informal lesson plans (such as the EQUALS curriculum) tailored to specific cognitive and physical needs, utilising Total Communication strategies (Makaton, PECS, AAC).
IEP & Data Implementation: Follow and implement robust, SMART IEPs, monitoring and recording daily student progress using specialised SEND assessment frameworks.
Behaviour & Sensory Support: Implement established Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) plans, utilising sensory diets and Team Teach techniques to safely and empathetically manage challenging behaviours.
Medical & Physical Care: Work alongside the school nursing team to ensure Individual Healthcare Plans (IHCPs) are followed, accommodating medical needs (PEG feeding, seizure management) and physical management (hoisting) with dignity.
Classroom Leadership: Step in to effectively direct and deploy the permanent classroom team of TAs and HLTAs during your cover shift.
About You (Person Specification)
Essential Criteria:
Qualifications: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or QTLS, with evidence of professional development.
Experience: Proven experience teaching and managing classroom support staff, implementing learning plans, and tracking student progress. We highly value and welcome applicants with Primary (KS1/KS2) teaching experience.
Knowledge: A strong understanding of the UK SEND Code of Practice, alternative communication methods, and certified training in positive handling (e.g., Team Teach) or a willingness to undergo training.
Attributes: High emotional resilience, exceptional empathy, patience, a great sense of humour, and the ultimate flexibility to adapt to changing classroom dynamics.
Desirable Criteria:
Experience teaching SEND, preferably within a UK Special School setting.
Experience with the EQUALS curriculum, autism provision, or writing SMART targets for high-needs learners.
Training in specific medical interventions (PEG feeding, Midazolam administration) or a high level of physical fitness for active handling.
