Working Hours: 35 Hours Per Week

Work Pattern:  Staff will work a structured rota over a 14-week cycle, covering a combination of day shifts (8:00am–3:00pm), evening shifts (2:30pm–9:30pm), and night shifts (9:00pm–8:30am). As the service operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the role requires flexibility to work weekends and bank holidays as part of the shift pattern. The rota is designed to provide a balanced distribution of shifts, averaging 35 hours per week.

This is a rewarding role which involves working face to face with some of the most in vulnerable in our society: Manchester's homeless community. Etrop Grange offers emergency provision for those who are rough sleeping, going to be roofless or in need of accommodation out of hours. Etrop Grange is a 69 bed mixed accommodation for individuals with a range of support needs, from low to complex. We also accommodate up to 6 couples at any one time and accept pets at the provision. Residents are also provided with 2 meals a day at the project.
 
In this role you will support clients to settle into accommodation, many times directly from rough sleeping. You will complete booking in paperwork and benefit claims with residents for both Housing Benefit and Universal Credit when required. You will be allocated a case load of residents to support during their stay at the accommodation.  You will be expected to complete support sessions and signpost residents to benefits agencies, complete referrals to drug and alcohol support services and to mental health services. You will also complete move on work with residents, identify what their support needs are, and complete suitable referrals. This can be to inhouse accommodation services, ABEN projects, commissioned sites, private rented accommodation and to social housing.
 
The average length of stay for residents at Etrop Grange is 28days, as residents are moved daily into alternative accommodations. The role is therefore very fast-paced and being able to multitask and organise your time is vital. In addition to ensuring there is a flow of residents into the project and out to other projects, you will be responsible for the day to day running of the service. All staff are responsible for Health and Safety of the building so will complete building checks, room checks and welfare checks each day. Staff will also be required to tidy and clean parts of the accommodation, keeping the conditions to a good standard.
 
In addition, there will be emergency incidents that occur on shift at times, that you will be required to deal with. This could be contacting the emergency services for a resident, liaising with professionals about a resident or supporting someone in a time of crisis.
 
You will also be required to complete admin duties whilst on shift, we use multiple systems each day – Liquid Logic, HPA2, Manchester Move, MAS gateway and programmes on Microsoft Office and Microsoft 365. Training and shadowing will be provided on how to use these systems.
 
This role is part of a 14-week rolling rota and is staffed 24/7 onsite, 7 days a week. The shifts consist of days, evenings and waking nights. There are 4 cover weeks on the rota, and you will be required to work whatever shift is prioritised at the time. Shift work is crucial to the role and is non-negotiable as shifts are part of the contract, hence why you receive a 20% increment on top of the Grade 5 salary.
 
There is a Team Leader at Etrop Grange and 2 Homeless Lead Officers who line manage the team of 15 support workers and onsite cook. There are security onsite and cleaning staff but these are outsourced.

The homeless service is always expanding and adapting. You will join a team of colleagues who are highly motivated to learn, develop and grow with the service. This is an extremely rewarding but also at times challenging role, which offers excellent opportunities for knowledge building and training.
 
Being competent in IT skills is essential at Manchester City Council as we use several systems daily. You will be provided with training for the systems but will need a good understanding of IT in general.
 
An ability to be resilient and to effectively be able to de-escalate is vital, especially in times of crisis. A warm friendly approach, whilst maintaining professional boundaries is crucial, and a positive demeanour with a can-do attitude, is what a candidate who will work at Etrop Grange should demonstrate.
 
Rough sleeping, being roofless or leaving somewhere safe in an emergency situation, and subsequently becoming homeless, can be the lowest point of someone’s life.
