SEND Teacher (English) (Secondary) Post Reference Number: EXP-EN ELWS 001 Post Title: SEND Teacher English Recruiting Manager: Lianne Bate Location: Expanse Learning Wigan School, Tyrer Avenue, Wigan, WN3 5XE Salary: £31,650 to £43,607 (QTS Status) Spine point dependent upon experience. Work Pattern: FTE (37.5 Hrs per week) Responsible to: Headteacher Responsible for: English Teacher Closing Date: 19/10/2026 Role Purpose The English Teacher will be responsible for delivering high-quality, personalised English education to students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). The role aims to ensure that all students, regardless of their starting point, are supported to develop confidence in communication, reading, writing, speaking and listening, functional literacy and, where appropriate, formal English qualifications at GCSE or Functional Skills level. The post holder will plan and deliver engaging, differentiated and accessible lessons, informed by Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), and will work closely with teaching assistants, therapists and the wider multidisciplinary team to remove barriers to learning. Through a trauma-informed, inclusive and student-centred approach, the teacher will foster positive relationships, promote emotional regulation and behaviour for learning, and prepare students to make progress and achieve as far as possible. The Personal Specification: Criteria Essential/ Desirable Source Qualifications PGCE qualification or equivalent Essential Application QTS or QTLS Status Essential Application English Subject Specialism Essential Application/Interview GCSE Grade C/5 or above in English & Maths Essential Application Knowledge Strong subject knowledge in English, appropriate to the age and ability range of students Essential Interview A secure understanding of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), including: Desirable Interview Knowledge of adaptive teaching and differentiated instruction for pupils working significantly below age-related expectations. Desirable Interview Understanding of EHCPs (Education, Health and Care Plans) and how to use them to plan, deliver and review learning. Desirable Interview Awareness of safeguarding, child protection, and statutory guidance (e.g. Working Together to Safeguard Children). Desirable Interview Knowledge of positive behaviour support and trauma-informed practices. Desirable Interview Familiarity with functional skills, and alternative qualification pathways where appropriate. Desirable Interview Understanding of assessment for learning in a SEND context, including small-step progress and non-linear development. Desirable Interview Skills Ability to adapt and personalise the English curriculum to meet diverse learning needs. Essential Interview Skilled in using a wide range of multi-sensory, practical and visual teaching approaches. Desirable Interview Ability to break down reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar and comprehension into manageable steps. Essential Interview Strong communication skills, able to explain concepts clearly to pupils with speech, language and processing difficulties. Essential Interview Ability to build positive, trusting relationships with pupils who may have experienced trauma or disengagement from learning. Essential Interview Skilled in behaviour management using de-escalation and positive reinforcement strategies Desirable Interview Ability to work effectively with teaching assistants, therapists, SENCOs and external professionals. Desirable Interview Ability to use assistive technology and specialist resources to support learning. Desirable Interview Resilience, patience and emotional intelligence in challenging situations.
