Contract Type: Permanent Salary: Grade M. Scale 52 - £72,845 to Scale 55 - £80,165 Hours Per Week: 36 Base Location: Hyde Town Hall, Market Street, Hyde, SK14 1AL Assessment Date: Monday, 30th November 2026 Are you passionate about making a real difference in the lives of children and families? Do you bring compassion, curiosity, collaboration, conversation, and courage to your practice? If so, Tameside is looking for you. The Role Following the promotion of the current postholder, Tameside has an exceptional opportunity to appoint a new Head of SEND to help shape and lead the next phase of our SEND improvement journey. As Head of SEND, you will provide strategic leadership across our SEND system, leading statutory services, driving inclusion and transformation, and working collaboratively with education, health and care partners to deliver sustainable improvement. You will play a key role in implementing national SEND reforms, shaping local provision and embedding a culture of high aspiration and continuous improvement. Tameside is on a significant improvement journey that has accelerated considerably in recent months. We have strengthened leadership, sharpened our focus on outcomes and inclusion, and built momentum across the local area partnership. Our governance is strong and we are making positive progress against the requirements of the Department for Education Improvement Notice, with this progress recognised in recent feedback from the DfE. While we remain ambitious and clear about the work still to do, there is a growing confidence across the partnership and a shared determination to deliver lasting improvement for children and young people with SEND. You will be joining a supportive and experienced leadership team, with all senior posts recruited and a collective commitment to improvement. There is a strong sense of shared endeavour, openness and ambition across the service, providing a strong platform from which to lead and succeed. This role offers the opportunity to build on the progress already made and lead the next phase of improvement, helping to shape a high-performing, inclusive SEND system that makes a genuine difference to the lives of children, young people and their families. Please see the Job Description and Person Specification for further details about the role and requirements. About You We are looking for an exceptional leader with the energy, vision and resilience to lead SEND services through the next stage of their development. You will be passionate about improving outcomes for children and young people with SEND and bring the strategic leadership skills needed to deliver lasting change across complex systems and partnerships. You will have the credibility to work effectively with families, schools, elected members, health partners and regulators, building confidence and driving collective improvement. You will be an inclusive and collaborative leader who understands the importance of relationships in delivering sustainable improvement. We are looking for someone who can bring people together around a shared purpose, strengthen trust across all parts of the partnership and create the conditions for others to succeed. Your ability to build strong professional relationships will be as important as your technical SEND expertise. This is a role that requires commitment, energy, resilience and determination. SEND leadership is rewarding, impactful and deeply meaningful work, but it is also complex, demanding and highly visible. We are seeking someone who can navigate challenge with confidence, maintain focus through periods of pressure, and inspire others with optimism and purpose. You will thrive in a high-performing leadership environment where success is shared, challenge is welcomed and relationships matter. We are looking for a leader who is generous in their leadership, committed to developing others and motivated by collective achievement rather than individual recognition. The ability to build confidence, foster strong partnerships and contribute positively to team culture will be as important as technical SEND expertise. Most importantly, you will recognise both the challenges and achievements of the past whilst maintaining a clear focus on what comes next, bringing the pace, fresh thinking and drive needed to help realise our ambitions for the future. If you are motivated by making a difference and excited by the opportunity to shape one of the most important improvement agendas in local government, we would love to hear from you. Applying Authentically With AI: Our Greater Manchester Approach
Across Greater Manchester’s local authorities, we want to hear your genuine experiences, skills and motivations, expressed in your own words.
To keep our recruitment process fair and inclusive, please complete your application personally and follow the instructions carefully. AI can be used to support you - for example, to help structure your answers or as a reasonable adjustment - but your application should still reflect your authentic voice.
Applications that depend too heavily on AI‑generated content may not progress to shortlisting.
This guidance outlines acceptable and unacceptable uses of AI, along with suggestions for using it in a way that supports you while keeping your application true to you.
What Is AI and How Do We Use It Across Greater Manchester?
AI refers to technology that can create or refine content, such as text, ideas, summaries, or planning. It can help improve productivity, problem-solving, and creativity.
We’re open to using innovative digital tools where they can help us work smarter and deliver better services for our residents. However, every use of AI is carefully considered to make sure it is ethical, responsible, and aligned with public-sector values.
When it comes to recruitment, we take a human-centred approach.
This means:
A trained hiring manager reads every application
Shortlisting is based on objective criteria required for the job
Interviews are conducted in person or via teams by the hiring manager for the role
All hiring decisions are made by hiring managers, not algorithms
AI does not make decisions in our recruitment process and our managers are being upskilled to spot AI in applications, particularly when this might have been used in a way that doesn’t feel genuine. If something in an application raises a question or concern, we will test this out with assessments or at the interview stage to confirm authenticity.
Our aim isn’t to catch anyone out but to make sure we’re getting to know the real you, giving every candidate a fair chance and finding the right person for the role.
Using AI in Your Application
When it comes to job applications, what matters most to us is you. We want to see your personality, your experience, and what excites you about joining our team.
We recognise that AI can be a helpful tool to support accessibility during the application process. If you choose to use AI for support, please read the instructions carefully and make sure your application is written in your own words, reflecting your genuine skills, knowledge, experience and enthusiasm.
We’re looking forward to hearing your story.
How to use AI Effectively and Responsibly
Your application is your chance to show us:
Who you are
What you can bring
The values you hold
Why you want to make a difference
AI can help you organise your thoughts or improve clarity but it cannot express your unique voice, experiences, or motivations.
AI is most helpful when used to:
Help you structure the information you are providing to evidence the criteria
Give examples of how to use STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result)
Proof-read to highlight grammar or spelling errors
Provide inspiration if you're finding it difficult to find the right words to explain something
But remember: your honesty, lived experience, and motivations are irreplaceable.
Do’s and Don’ts for Using AI in the Recruitment Process
Do:
Use AI as a supportive tool, not a replacement
Ask AI to help tidy up your writing or clarify structure
Use it to brainstorm examples, then rewrite them in your own voice
Reflect on AI suggestions and adapt them to match your experience
Use AI to help with research, but express your understanding yourself
Don’t:
Copy and paste AI-generated content directly into your application
Let AI exaggerate or invent experience you do not have
Rely on generic statements that don’t reflect the specific role requirements
Remove your individuality, we want to hear your voice
Stay Safe When Applying
To protect yourself from recruitment scams, please only apply for roles through the official greater.jobs website and associated recruitment systems. We will never ask for your personal information outside of this process.
